During our initial examination, we will measure your pocket depths around your gums and determine what type of cleaning is appropriate.
prophy
This type of cleaning is reserved for healthy teeth and is normally done every six months, along with an exam to note any developments, or monitor those already noted.
scaling & root planing
This is what is known as a "deep cleaning" and is necessary when pocket depths exceed the normal healthy range (periodontits). Scaling & root planing is done under local anesthetic, and is completed in at least two appointments.
maintenance
On-going care after scaling & root planing is accomplished through maintenance appointments. Because gingival health has already been compromised, extra care and effort are necessary to ensure that the disease state does not return. These cleanings are done as often as four times per year.
patient instructions after scaling & root planing
Tenderness and increase in sensitivity to cold may be experienced due to the shrinkage of the gum pockets as they heal. To help reduce any discomfort and promote optimal healing, follow these instructions:
- Take 800mg ibuprofen (4 tablets of 200mg Advil or Motrin) every 8 hours
- Rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt per cup of warm water) for 30 seconds 2-3 times daily.
- Eat soft foods two days following treatment
- If a fluoride rinse has been given to you, rinse twice per day, expectorating afterwards without rinsing with water. Do not eat/drink for 30 minutes after rinsing.
- Do not floss or use a perio-aid for the first two days. Brushing should be be done gently.
